Addressing the Design & Verification Challenges of Cognitive Radio and SDR
Overview:
This webcast will discuss how simulation and test can be combined to address Cognitive Radio and Software-Defined Radio physical-layer design and test challenges.

The ability to support multiple radio standards, or waveform applications, is one of the primary attractions of software-defined radios. This flexibility introduces greater challenges in both design and test, due to expanded regions of operation including greater frequency coverage, wider bandwidths, varying performance requirements, and signal modulations ranging from simple constant envelope FM to high peak-average OFDMA with MIMO with signal formal formats such as Mobile WiMAX™ and Long-Term Evolution (LTE). It can also effect even greater separation between the baseband processing design teams and the RF design teams.

In this webcast we will discuss how to mitigate many of the risks inherent in SDR development and how to take advantage of the SDR's inherent flexibility to improve the design and test process.

We will then introduce the concept of a Cognitive Radio Algorithm and Development Testbed. Cognitive Radios, often based on SDRs, typically incorporate some form of spectral sensing as an input to the cognition engine. Testing the spectrum sensing and cognition algorithm performance using realistic spectral environments can be challenging. This testbed combines live, remote field RF spectrum sensing, whitespace algorithm development, OFDMA link simulation, and test equipment.

Presenter:
Bob Cutler, Lead Technologist Agilent Technologies

Bob Cutler is a lead technologist within Agilent's Technology Leadership Organization (TLO) He is a co-inventor of Vector Signal Analyzers (VSA's), and has been involved the development of modulation analysis techniques and other measurement algorithms for a wide variety of digital RF communications formats, with an emphasis on new and emerging technologies. More recently Bob has been developing RF sensor networks for signal detection and TDOA-based geolocation algorithms. As a measurement and technology expert, Bob has also actively contributed to the creation of RF test procedures incorporated into various IEEE and ETSI standards, and is currently Agilent's technical representative to the SDR Forum.

Greg Jue, Applications Development Engineer/Scientist Agilent Technologies

Greg Jue is an applications development engineer/scientist with Agilent EEsof Electronic Design Automation (EDA), specializing in SDR, LTE and WiMAX™ applications. Greg wrote the design simulation section in Agilent's new LTE book, and has authored numerous articles, presentations and application notes, including Agilent's new LTE algorithm reference whitepaper and Agilent's new Cognitive Radio whitepaper. Greg pioneered combining design and test solutions at Agilent Technologies, and authored the popular application notes 1394 and 1471 on combining simulation and test. Before joining Agilent in 1995, he worked on system design for the Deep Space Network at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech University.
