As electronic devices become smaller and faster and are increasingly equipped with high-resolution displays, the problem of radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) becomes more prevalent. Higher frequencies result in shorter pulses and faster rise times, which increase the intensity of the fundamental frequency, as well as the harmonics. Compounding the difficulty is the fact that regulatory agencies are becoming more demanding in terms of compliance.

Traditional countermeasures such as capacitors and shielding can add complexity, cost, and risk to the design process. This paper examines the increasing importance of planning for EMI earlier in the design cycle and the benefits of using spread-spectrum clocking solutions.
