Since its invention less than a decade ago, USB has become the technology of choice for connecting peripherals to PCs. The success of USB can be attributed to its robust performance characteristics, low cost, ease-of-use, and small connector size. Its wide use has driven down connectivity costs, and enabled the proliferation of complex peripherals and mobile devices. This article addresses three USB trends that are shaping the future of portable computing and communications: how to integrate USB features and functionality into embedded systems, how to implement USB On-The-Go (OTG) connectivity between two peripherals, and how to design a WirelessUSB-based system.
