Declining endurance in flash memory is impacting embedded product lifetimes. This paper discusses the characteristics of solid state memory, specifically as they relate to flash memory media life (endurance) and performance. It shows how alternative file systems and file system configurations can significantly improve both media life and performance in a Linux/Android environment. Using a recent smartgrid meter project as an example, the paper documents the real world increases in endurance achieved by a leading OEM using Datalight Reliance Nitro.
