To meet the rapid growth of mobile data demand, infrastructure networks are evolving from 3G to 4G LTE and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A). The network topology is also shifting from a homogenous network made up exclusively of macro cells to a heterogeneous network of small cells supplementing macro cells to improve throughput, coverage, and user experience. In addition to the functionality of macro base stations, small cell base stations require a small form factor, low power consumption and intelligent self-configuration, and commonly support multiple network standards to facilitate the network's evolution to higher data rates.
