The distributed hierarchical cloud is an emerging cloud architecture that provides cloud services to users and processes client data at locations close to them. It allows users to achieve a better user experience, reduces network bandwidth, provides lower latency, and achieves a lower total cost of ownership. The edge server proposed in this paper is a critical component of the distributed cloud. A case study of deploying edge server in an education cloud for Hongkou MOE, Shanghai PRC, is presented.
