The 8-bit microcontroller has been around for close to 40 years. In this age of rapidly advancing technology, when electronic devices seem to become obsolete not long after they get to market, that boggles the mind. To what can we attribute such longevity? I fully agree that 8 bits are good for bit manipulating tasks. Microchip´s 8 biter have several advantages (constant pinning, good and free developing tools ..) but the segmented RAM and program memory especially on the PIC16 family appears as a heavy disadvantage.
New families as PIC18FxxK22 may be a real competitor against the ARM(ada) of cheap 16/32 chips.
