In the past, there have been two basic ways to back-up data on a group of systems. The first method, known as local or distributed backup, involves directly attaching a backup device to each system. The second method, known as centralized backup, involves attaching a central backup device to a single server. Backups for all other systems are then directed across a local area network (LAN), through the single server, to the central backup device.
Today there is now a third approach emerging that is generally referred to as LAN-free backup. LAN-free backup involves attaching a central back-up device to a Storage Area Network (SAN) which all attached servers share.
