This paper presents fundamental concepts related to the blind signal separation (BSS) problem and its solutions. Special attention is given to solutions that employ independent component analysis (ICA). The paper briefly explains the complex underlying mathematical concepts of BSS, and introduces the BSS problem statement — an intuitive explanation of how ICA techniques are applied, how and why they work, and application domains of the discussed methods.
